How To Choose The Best Hosting For Beginners

Best Web Hosting For BeginnersChoosing the  best hosting for beginners can really be a pain! The more hosting sites you visit, the more confused you’re likely to get.

Fact is, I was surfing through hosting provider sites before I started this post — and realized just how confusing it can be to make wise choices.

Impatient to get hosting? See my #1 Recommendation for Hosting.

I got to thinking how beginners wouldn’t have a clue how to figure out what to even look for when it comes to hosting.

This post is about gaining a basic knowledge of what to look for and how to make the best choice.

There must be thousands of places to buy hosting, but even when you know what to look for, it’s a daunting task to sort out the information.

But the truth is:

Any website’s success starts with good hosting.

At the end of this post I’ll give you my top 3 recommendations for the Best Hosting.

The Best Hosting For Beginners

Here’s what you’ll need to know about hosting:

  1. Shared hosting is probably your best bet to start out with.
  2. Some host serve your website to a computer faster than others.
  3. Some hosting companies provide 1-click WordPress Install.
  4. Hosting providers don’t all provide good service, support, and help.
  5. Up time is what percentage of time the hosting company makes your website available on the web.
  6. Many hosting providers will give you a domain name with a purchase (for the first year, then you renew it after that).
  7. The best price will always be for multiple of years instead of paying by the month.
  8. Beware of up sells on the check out page
  9. Some Host provide SSL certificates free

1. Types of Hosting Plans to Choose From

Shared hosting. This is when a service provider serves multiple websites from the same server. It will always be the least expensive option, and is what most beginners need.

Shared hosting works great until your website starts getting thousands of hits a day. Then the Company is likely to ask you to go to VPS or dedicated alternatives.

VPS hosting. VPS hosting is the next step up from shared hosting. Even though it’s still shared, there are fewer websites on this server, and some serving assets are dedicated to each website. VPS offers more power and flexibility, but you will have the responsibility of maintenance that usually comes as part of shared hosting.

Dedicated hosting. Dedicated hosting means you own the entire server by your self, and is ideal for very large websites with a large and constant volume of visitors.

2. Some Host are Faster than Others

Ever try to get to a website that takes so long to load that you just click off and go to another? I think we’ve all had that experience and it’s bad for everybody.

How long it takes your website to load is important to you, the search engines, and your readers. Even though there are several factors involved in website speed, hosting speed is primary.

You don’t want to spend time and money on a website, that won’t load because the host serves it too slow.

3. One Click WordPress Install

OneClick WordPress Install

A Content Management System (CMS) is a platform that allows you to create and publish the content on your website to the internet.

There are others, but WordPress is by far the most widely used CMS. The reason is simple: It’s completely free, the easiest to use, most reliable, and the meticulously kept up to date.

Once Click Install means you never need worry about putting together complicated html, css, and php files to make your website. Just click on WordPress install and start creating your website.

4. Beginners Need The Best Hosting Support

To tell you the truth most bloggers and web marketers never understand much about hosting, because it’s the most technical aspect of the internet.

That’s why good support is a key ingredient to choosing the best host. And a lot of hosting providers simply don’t provide one on one support for their customers.

Some of the best choices for beginners will only include live chat, and others will provide live phone support. As long as it’s live and 24 hours a day, either will serve you well when you need help.

5. You’ll Need Hosting With Good Up Time

Ever have trouble with your computer? Some problem that keeps you from getting online, or just temporarily running slow?

Basically speaking, hosting providers use computers that serve your website to the Internet, and they have the same problems you encounter on your PC.

You don’t want to choose a hosting company that allows their equipment to go down often or for long periods of time. When your host is down, no one can find your site on the web.

6. How About A Free Domain Name With Your New Host

Some hosting services will give you the first years registration as an incentive for using them. After the first year, you’ll need to pay your own registration for as long as you keep the domain name.

There are much more important considerations when it comes to beginners choosing a host provider:

But a domain name is still worth $10 – $16 dollars?

7. Hosting Providers Prefer Long Term Contracts

hosting is cheaper by the year

And so do you, because paying for hosting with an extended contract is usually quite a bit cheaper than month to month.

When you see an advertised price on a hosting website you can rest assured it’s for a contract from 1-2 years depending on the company.

Because it takes a while to actually set up your plan on their servers, they would rather you plan on staying for awhile.

And it works out better for you when you choose a good hosting company, because moving your website from one provider to another can be a real pain.

8. Up Sells Can Make Choosing A Host Even More Confusing

These are common up sells that should be included in the price?

When beginners are new to the web they are easy victims to up sells, and some host companies take advantage of your being new to the arena.

You’ll never see the up sells until you’ve wrung your hands over prices, alternative hosting choices, and finally made your decision.

Then when you’ve finally got to the check out page, they hit you with several options to purchase something else? As a beginner, you rarely need to choose these, and you might fare well by leaving that page open and doing your shopping again.

By leaving the page open you can go back to other choices and see if they offer the same alternatives for free?

9. SSL Makes Your Site Secure

Ever seen one of these when you go to a website?

Browser Connection is not secure

Whether you have or not, they are becoming more prevalent and will eventually take over the web when you land on a site without an SSL certificate.

So, you may want to look for hosting-providers that provide SSL free. You don’t want to turn off your visitors before they even get on your website.

  1. Hi Mike,
I couldn’t agree more that the SiteRubix platform at Wealthy Affiliate is an excellent web hosting choice for beginners and experienced webmasters alike. I’ve had my site hosted there for about 15 months now, and both the reliability and support are outstanding. In today’s environment, an SSL Certificate can’t be regarded as optional. It’s essential, and WA recognizes that fact by including this critical service rather than treating it as an upsell.

Another aspect of my hosting package that I really appreciate is that it is managed WordPress hosting. Not only is WordPress a one-click install initially but I’m promptly notified of all updates to WP and any plugins I use through the WP Dashboard. Updates are also a simple click which is perfect for those of us who aren’t technical gurus.

This overview of web hosting considerations is well done!

    • Thanks for stopping by Linda
I remember how I started out with a popular hosting company and found that 2 things out quickly:
      1. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing
      2. The support was terrible

Hosting itself is something few bloggers understand, or understand how to use what they have to the fullest advantage.

Like you said, Wealthy Affiliate hosting is fast, reliable, configured in such a way that there’s really not much for anyone to do but build a website. And I’ve been around for awhile, and have never found any hosting support that can compare.
